DATABANK
Basel World
By Katherine Jentleson Chart by Nigel Holmes
Forget Beijing—Basel, Switzerland, is where you’ll find the best in international showmanship this
summer. Art Basel, which runs from the 4th to the 8th this month, has always had a wide array of
international galleries and artists, but in the past decade it’s become downright global. This year’s
edition features galleries from 13 countries that had no exhibitor presence in 1998, plus two from
China—Beijing Art Now and Boers-Li Gallery—and one from India, Talwar Gallery, all of which are
making their Basel debuts. Although this diversification of the fair’s exhibitor roster is notable, what’s
more interesting is that the work of artists from every corner of the globe is now popping up there.
Basel is showing more and more art from Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Latin
America and Scandinavia. While many artists from these regions are represented by galleries from
their home nations, many others come to Basel via dealers from perennial art powers like the U.S.,
the U.K. and Germany. Comparing the nationalities of artists at last year’s fair with those of their galleries
reveals some interesting trends in art-world colonization.
