Hirst’s Diamond Skull Sparks Criticisms

Published: June 13, 2007
LONDON—If Damien Hirst’s diamond-studded, platinum human skull, titled For the Love of God, sells for its $100 million price tag, it will be the most expensive artwork ever made. And the work is sparking discussions on everything from diamond trafficking to the “drunk with money” art market to the integrity of Hirst himself, The New York Times reports. Hirst “isn’t criticizing the excess, not even ironically, but rolling in it and loving it,” the Times quotes British journalist Nick Cohen, from The Evening Standard. “The sooner he goes out of fashion, the better.”
