ROME—Italy is scheduled today to unveil the Euphronius Krater that recently was returned to the country by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Italy secured the return of the 2,500-year-old vase in February 2006 as part of a deal that included 20 other antiquities. The Euphronius piece will be presented in a ceremony hosted by Culture Minister Francesco Rutelli and his predecessor, Rocco Buttiglione, who started the country's high-profile campaign to recover stolen art. The work will become part of an exhibition at the Quirinal presidential palace featuring recovered pottery, sculpture, and paintings.
The culture ministry also confirmed today that New York philanthropist Shelby White, who helped finance the opening of new Greek and Roman galleries at the Met, will return 10 artifacts from her private collection. |
