British photographer Tim Hetherington's "American soldier resting at bunker, Korengal Valley, Afghanistan, 16 September," published in "Vanity Fair," was selected World Press Photo of the Year.

AMSTERDAM—The British photographer Tim Hetherington won the World Press Photo competition, one of the most prestigious awards for photojournalists, for his image of an exhausted U.S. soldier after a fire-fight with Afghanistan, the Associated Press reports. Hetherington took the photograph for Vanity Fair. "This image shows the exhaustion of a man and the exhaustion of a nation," said jury chairman Gary Knight. The judges awarded first, second and third prizes in 20 categories, with two honorable mentions. Getty Images won the most, with five awards.
