The Land Girls: Cinderellas of the Soil

A new exhibition which focuses on Sussex and the land girls who were trained, lived and worked on the Sussex Downs and surrounding areas.

The Land Girls tells personal stories of the war years, using memories, paintings, posters, photographs and other objects, especially the distinctive uniform. The uniform is the trigger for the whole experience - where it was made, who wore it, how women felt about wearing it and the reactions they encountered.

The exhibition also considers the lives of former land girls today, and the enduring appeal of an idealized image of the Women’s Land Army in memorabilia, vintage and fashion clothing, and re-enactment.

Including loans from national museums and major art collections, and individuals, museums and history societies throughout Sussex, The Land Girls marks the 70th anniversary of the onset of World War Two and the resurgence of the Women’s Land Army.

The Land Girls is supported by the Their Past Your Future Phase 2 Programme which is provided by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council and supported by the Big Lottery Fund.
