About Noble Maritime Collection

The mission of the Noble Maritime Collection is to preserve and interpret the art, writings, and historical maritime artifacts of the distinguished marine artist, John A. Noble; to continue Noble’s legacy of celebrating the people and traditions of the working waterfront of New York Harbor; to preserve and interpret the history of Sailors’ Snug Harbor in its collections, exhibitions and programs; and to operate a maritime study center inspired by John A. Noble and the mariners of Sailors’ Snug Harbor.

The Noble Maritime Collection is housed in a 28,500 square foot, fully restored National Historic Landmark building on the grounds of the former retirement home for mariners, Sailors’ Snug Harbor. The museum is located in Building D, one of the first five buildings in the country designated as National Historic Landmarks.  The Noble Crew, a corps of volunteers, donated over one million dollars worth of labor and materials for the rehabilitation of Building D, which began in 1992 and was completed in 2000.
