Magnificent Porcelains that Crossed the Sea

After the Meiji restoration (1868), New York became the primary market
for modern Japanese porcelain. Morimura-kumi (now Noritake Company
Ltd.) played a leading role in Japan’s porcelain export industry at
that time. On March 10,1876, Toyo Morimura, a step brother of the
founder of Morimura-kumi, Morimura Ichizameon, boarded the American
ocean liner Oceanic bound for the United States. Toyo ended up becoming
one of the founders of The Nippon Club, the oldest Japanese Social Club
in the US.
