Susan Grossman — Biography

Susan Grossman's dramatic, large-scale charcoal drawings of New York streets and Long Island landscapes capture the beat and energy of the city in her predominately monochromatic urban landscapes.  “Like a single frame snipped out of a film, her works arrest an instant in an unfolding story. The question of what may happen next is left up to the viewer’s imagination, so her pictures linger in the mind.” (Gerard Haggerty)  Her kinetic, brooding images are of everyday street life, observed as if filtered through a film noir lens. The backlit figures are often caught in mid-stride as they weave through traffic, cutting across long early morning or late afternoon shadows.

Grossman’s Long Island landscapes are never static. Despite the rural subject matter, an implied narrative elicits the viewer to imagine the next, or perhaps the previous, frame. Spots of color in a black and white memory world act as visual markers, guiding the eye through the composition and creating a particular focused incidence in a field of imminent change.
