Ying Li: Coastal Paintings

November 20, 2008—January 3, 2009
Throughout the Modern era gestural painting has been thought to make manifest some inner struggle or turmoil. Van Gogh, Soutine, and Pollock exorcised personal demons while creating their iconic works. Ying Li's brand of expressionism includes raw and powerfully energetic paint handling, but without the angst and neurosis. Li's impassioned canvases exist in the here and now, exuding a near giddy excitement in the observation of nature's phenomenon spread out before her.
