Smith started as a painter but realized that he could make sculptures using the welding skills he had picked up while working in a car factory as a young man. He continued to paint and draw, and saw a relationship between his sculpture and the gestural style of his drawings. Like many of Smith’s works, The Five Spring uses found machine parts, and the title refers to its five principal elements, one of which is a spring mechanism.
