La Milagrosa: Photographs by Jacek Gancarz

June 12, 2008—July 3, 2008

This photo-documentary project by local photographer, Jacek Gancarz, consists of a series of black & white portraits of Cubans who come to pray for miracles from a local patronized “saint” named Amelia Goyri.  Fondly nick-named “La Milagrosa”,  she buried in the Cristobal Colon cemetery in Havana, Cuba.  While she is not a canonized saint, Gancarz in his portraits uncovers what is behind the faith in an “extraordinary woman” to whom prayers and wishes are universal.  His photos capture and uniquely speak to the current social, political and economic status of Cubans living in Cuba.  Jacek Gancarz is a free-lance photographer based in south Florida, and continues working on long-term self-directed documentary projects.
