PAST EXHIBITION

Comics, Heroes, And American Visual Culture

January 24, 2009—April 26, 2009

Hodge Gallery
In this exhibition, original artworks by pioneers of the genre trace the development of comic strips, to comic books and graphic novels from early 20th century to the mid-1990s. The comic and fantasy art works were collected by Dan Howard, a former professor of art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.  Howard donated the entire collection to the Sheldon Memorial Art Gallery in 1999, believing that comic art should be seen and appreciated within the context of art and art history, rather than simply being perceived as "popular" art. This exhibition was organized by the Sheldon Museum of Art, University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
