Felrath Hines

Indianapolis,IN (American, b. 1913 - d. 1993)

Hines, who was 80 when he died in 1993, was a superb colorist who moved from earlyexpressionist works to more modulated innovative compositions of harmonious colored geometric forms — crosses, diamonds and squares in light or darker yellow, olive green, rusty orange, magenta, purple. In each instance, his selection of the colors and the abstract forms — and his intuitive arrangement of these elements on the canvas — were, as one critic wrote, the work of “a lyric artist of real achievement.”
