Kay WalkingStickSyracuse, New York (American)Art writer Cynthia Nadelman says in an essay in the exhibition catalogue that “Kay WalkingStick has long painted natural phenomena – whether water sources, mountains,n or plains – but more and more, her depictions have come to include history, art history, geography, and specific place, as opposed to her earlier emphasis on expressive landscape as metaphor or symbol.” In her new works, all diptychs, WalkingStick paints imposing landscapes in rich earth tones and incorporates geometric patterns typical of designs in Indian weaving. “Abstraction is always there,” writes Nadelman “but now she visits the mountains she paints, taking in their particularity, their specific ambiance, and their layers of human history.” |
