George Segal

May 9, 2009—August 2, 2009

Sculptor George Segal perfected the technique of applying dry plaster bandages directly to the body of his models.  He provided an environment for his body casting by adding a chair, a window frame, a table, etc., creating real life tableaux, using many close friends and family members as models. George Segal’s tableaux present vignettes of urban life based on scenes the artist encountered during his lifetime of wanderings through the streets of New York. They bear witness to the human condition in ordinary contexts, often focusing on abject subjects of alienation, loneliness, impoverishment and degradation. The white, ghostly figures take their places on “stage sets” lifted from the real world (theater marquees, diner counter, street signs). The sculptures evoke compassion in the viewer.
