About Solo Impression

SOLO Impression Inc., located in New York City’s Chelsea’s Art District, is a publisher of fine art lithograph, woodcut, letterpress, pochoir,  and embroidery, utilizing traditional and digital techniques.

SOLO Impression was founded in 1975 by Judith Solodkin, the first woman to graduate from the Tamarind Institute as a Master Lithographer.  In addition to publishing its own work, SOLO Impression contracts to print editions for artists and other publishers.

Many print shops regard the role of the printer as an artisan, a tool to be used by the artist.  SOLO impression takes a more collaborative position, working closely with the artist and using the knowledge of the printer to develop the images to their fullest. Often the printer serves to guide the artist through unfamiliar territory, acquainting the artist with the multitude of possibilities, suggesting innovative and experimental techniques.

SOLO Impression also publishes and prints livres d'artiste: Terry Winters with poet David Shapiro entitled After a Lost Original, Warm & Cold with Donald Sultan and David Mamet, Hiddenness with Richard Tuttle and Mei-mei Berssenbrugge, and General Instruction/Another Name with Grisha Bruskin and Lev Rubinstein, The Clouds with Harry Rand and Elaine Kurtz.

Works published by SOLO Impression have appeared in museums and exhibitions throughout the world, and can be found in many important private and public collections such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum, the Whitney Museum, the New York Public Library Print Collection, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Library of Congress, the National Gallery of Art, the Biblioteque Nationale, and the Tate Gallery, to name a few.
