Icons of the Desert: Early Aboriginal Paintings from Papunya

The first U.S. exhibition focusing on early acrylic paintings from the Australian indigenous settlement of Papunya, Icons of the Desert features approximately 50 paintings, dating from the 1970s and including many rare and spectacular examples. Drawn from the John and Barbara Wilkerson Collection, the exhibition opens a window onto the world’s oldest continuous culture with work by such masters of the Papunya School as Clifford Possum Tjapaltjarri, Shorty Lungkarta Tjungurrayi, Johnny Warangkula Tjupurrula, and Mick Namararri Tjapaltjarri.
