About Three Shadows Photography Art Centre

Since opening, Three Shadows has organized 7 major exhibitions, including the inaugural “New Photo Ten Years,” show, which traveled to the 20th FotoFest Biennale in Houston, USA in March 2008, “Outward Expressions, Inward Reflections,” our annual young photographers exhibit, and the first solo exhibitions of 2008, “In an Instant: Moving Images and Photography by Zhao Liang” and “Ten Years of Moving Rainbow: Photography by Xiong Wenyun.” These exhibitions have contributed much to the growing interest in photography art in China. To accompany these exhibitions, Three Shadows also organized lectures and symposium and published popular and limited edition books on contemporary photography.

Aside from exhibitions, Three Shadows’ outdoor summer concerts and film screenings have continued to attract visitors from around the world. In accordance with its aim to support young, emerging artists, Three Shadows also kicked off the Three Shadows Photography Award competition in 2008, the first award for photography art in China. With so much going on, Three Shadows has been called one of the most active art spaces in China, and recognized as a beloved home for photographers, artists, and art lovers from China and abroad.

In addition, the Three Shadows Library – the first library of photography in the country – has grown to over 2,000 books with the help of donations from individuals and foundations around the world; the darkrooms and digital labs in the Three Shadows Production Centre are growing, with photography classes, workshops, and children’s activities each month; and Three Shadows’ Artist-in-Residence Program welcomed renowned Spanish photographer Alberto Garcia-Alix, Grange Prize-winning photographer Sarah Ann Johnson (Canada), installation artist Jean Bernard Koeman (Netherlands), and young Chinese photographers Adou and Qiu to Beijing.
