2009 International Incheon Women Artist's Biennale

August 1, 2009—August 31, 2009

The International Incheon Women Artists’ Biennale (IWAB), supervised by Incheon Women Artists’ Biennale Organizing Committee (IWABOC), aims to advocate and promote all women artists’ creative endeavors without prejudice, and aims to act as bridge between the international art community and the local artists. IWAB was established out of the belief that femininity could be a catalyst for communication between different genders which would bring about a more accelerated parity in an equally-beneficial society.

The birth of the IWABOC is indebted to the active movement and awareness of the Incheon Women Artists Association (IWAA). Over the course of the 20th century, there have been a number of attempts by woman artists at Incheon to promote and present the studio practices of female artists. Respecting their achievements in raising the individual, the societal and the national consciousness, the IWAA created an annual exhibition for its members in the 1980s which led to the foundation of Incheon Women Artists’ Biennial in 2004. The 2004 IWAB success in representing works by women artists in Incheon brought the idea to create an international biennale. After the Pre-IWAB of 2006, the IWABOC held its first and truly international exhibition in 2007 and hopes to continue its bi-annual tradition of introducing international women artists, emerging or known, to the art world.
