Marjorie Welish — Biography

Marjorie Welish is an American poet, artist, and art critic. Welish is a graduate of Columbia University and received her M.F.A. degree from Vermont College and Norwich University.
As an artist and writer, Marjorie Welish explores the potentiality inherent in the topos of modern art in painterly diagrams meant to be read and interpreted as much as seen. Indecidability of the Sign: Frame and Blueprint invite considering this issue in an open-ended series.
Since her first solo show sponsored by the Whitney Museum Art Resources Center and subsequent exhibitions in New York City, she has received continual critical support, including three reviews in the New York Times.
Welish has received Grants and fellowships from several institutions including The 2003 Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation grant, The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts, International Studio Program, The Pollock-Krasner Foundation Fellowship, and Trust for Mutual Understanding. Most recently she has enjoyed a Fulbright Senior Specialist Fellowship in art at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University, in Frankfurt, Germany.
Welish is currently working on her second artist's commission from Granary Books. |
