Sichuan artist Yang Mian (b. 1970) addresses the issue of changing standards that are shaping the face of the social and cultural life in Chinese society. From personal to social values, existing to constantly shifting principles, Yang Mian questions and reflects on the contradictions raised and how they measure up to reality. "How has our life been changed - What kind of changes do we need?”
In his paintings, Yang Mian uses his original style and a monochromatic palette, to reinterpret images from every day advertisements. The figures have lost the slick ad-quality brilliance and fade into a mist, until they become flattened or completely disappear. Are these images reality or dreams? Yang Main feels that the more vivid the image the higher the standard, and therefore the more challenging principle to attain.
