Sandra Caplan — Biography

The work of Sandra Caplan is about still life; a central focus of flowers and various objects, fruits or vegetables, sometimes accompanied by a figure or animal and most recently by architectural forms.  The still life table top is often set against a window or opening through which one might look at a view of rolling sunlit hills, or the open sea off the Adriatic coast in Italy or it might be surrounded by densely patterned fabrics found within the studio.  In some of these arrangements there are detailed studies of villas dating from the early part of the 20th century  in the so called “Liberty style”, or Art Nouveau.

No matter how casual these compositions appear at first glance, there is a formality to them that is the culmination of acute observation and a highly developed and personal colour sense.  “The viewer should be able to enter the world of these objects, walk through and absorb the visual delights the paintings offer”. (from a review in Art and Antiques magazine, April 1989.)

Caplan studied art in her native Canada, Boston University and Yale University. She attended the Provincetown Workshop, the Yale-Norfolk Summer Program, the MacDowell Colony and spent a year in Rome, Italy on a Canada Council grant. She now divides the year working in Italy and New York.  She has shown in group and solo exhibitions, to name some: at the Winnipeg Art Gallery in Canada, theQuan Scheider Gallery, Toronto, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the Cooperstown Art Association, the Cast Iron Gallery, the First Street Gallery, the Atlantic Gallery, Fordham University, Farleigh Dickinson University, the Art in Embassies Prograam and the Fortezza di Civitella in the Abruzzo, Italy.

Her work is in various private collections in the U.S.A, Italy and Canada.
