American Waters is an incredible collection of photographs featuring images from all fifty states in the United States: from costal waters to rivers, lakes, creeks and man-made bodies of water. In 2002, award-winning underwater photographer Alex Kirkbride decided he wanted “an immense creative challenge”, so he set out on a three-year journey across the United States with his producer and partner Hazel Todd, living together in an Airstream trailer and traveling over 100,000 miles to photograph underwater images from every state.
Alex Kirkbride explains I wanted to try to push the boundaries of underwater photography and capture images expressive of American waters from coast to coast.
