Zvonimir Mihanovic — Biography

Zvonimir Mihanovic was born and raised near Split, Croatia on the beautiful Dalmatian coast, a part of the Adriatic graced by over one thousand islands. Across from Italy and north of Greece, Dalmatia is famed for a beauty that matches and sometimes surpasses that of its more famous  neighbors - this is reflected in the seascapes and landscapes of Mihanovic's world. Certainly the best-known living Croatian artist, Mihanovic paints idealized images based on the picturesque fishing villages of his youth. It is not only the amazing detail or compelling scenery that holds the viewer’s interest but the light and atmospheric quality that suffuses each painting.
After early and successful exhibitions that led to acclaim in his native country, Mihanovic returned to art studies at the Academia di Brera in Milan and went on to graduate in 1976 from the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris. He gained international renown when he was awarded the coveted Grand Prix in 1978 at the prestigious Salon d'Automne in Paris. Many exhibitions throughout the world followed this landmark in his career, building to the bestowal on Mihanovic of his country’s highest cultural honor - the Croatian Order of the Morning Star- in 1996.  He received this for his unique and historic contribution to the arts.
He participated in the Paris Maison de L’Unesco Janvier 1997 exhibit that celebrated the ancient culture of Split, Croatia and the 1700 year anniversary of the city’s famed Palace of Diocletian. His work was also selected for the exhibit in the Croatian Pavilion in Atlanta during the 1996 Summer Olympics. Although he has an active international career, Mihanovic continues to maintain a studio in his native Split, Croatia where he has a spectacular view of his favorite subject, the Adriatic Sea and her islands, and can indulge his passion for fishing and boating.
Zvonomir Mihanovic has exhibited at Hammer Galleries since 1998.
