Painting is for me the process of discovering what I want to see. I have always been attracted to the unknown rather than the known; for this reason abstraction is a natural and intuitive choice. I find a painting during the process of making it.
I am influenced and inspired by shapes and forms found in nature, and respond to growth cycles, and changing qualities of light and atmosphere. I am particularly drawn to dawn and dusk with its glowing light and dark landscape.
I like to explore contrast. The structure of my paintings often combines gesture with geometry. I like to pit hard edged forms against a calligraphic line; east meets west.
I paint in layers, building translucent veils of color, revealing and concealing shapes, lines, and traces as they appear. I’m seeking a deep ambiguous space with some painterly event on the surface. Mystery appeals to me. Each painting is a glimpse, a continuing conversation with the visual world.
