Specialties David MurrayAuckland, New Zealand (New Zealand, b. 1964)I am interested in the historical and personal perspective of human desire to continually push forward with the evolutionary process, and the drive this creates in us to protect and provide for each other. The majority of my work is based on a series called 'Hunter, Gatherer'. I chose the title because of its historical context. It leads you into looking at the work in a particular way - primitive, instinctual - too removed to have any particular relevance to our civilized lives today. The instinctual drive is to protect, provide and nurture. To defend and in some cases attack are some of the basic instincts still present in modern society, although they are re-enacted in different ways. My work uses simple ambiguous shapes and the qualities of the glass to create a sense of these fundamental stimuli. They are neither tool nor weapon but describe a feeling of intent. I make simple minimal forms without embellishment. These are large solid pieces with which I am trying to achieve a silent presence.
