In Guatemala,
Luis Gonzalez Palma studied architecture, painting, and
cinematography, in addition to photography. His photographs incorporate
painterly techniques such as toning, varnishing, and distressing the surface of
the photograph and printing the images on watercolor paper.
Luis Gonzalez Palma blends animal and religious imagery to
create a film style of portraiture photography. His images are a sensual
joining of the individual and the mythic through the combination of strong
historical and contemporary elements. A particular tension is evoked by
the mixture of indigenous and colonial cultures which adds dimensions of
strength and emotion.
