Don Porcella

Modesto, California (American)

I was born in Modesto, California and I grew up in a family of motivated creative people. While earning a BA in Psychology from the University of California at San Diego, I co-founded Artists in Motion Art Collective - a group of artists who created funk-art fashion, sculpture, and furniture from recycled and reclaimed materials. After graduating from UCSD, I returned to Northern California where I co-founded an original rock band called The Face Urchins. I graduated from California College of Arts and Crafts, with a BFA in Painting/Drawing in 2001.

I relocated to East Hampton New York to work as artist assistant to David Salle and Miriam Schapiro. I recently graduated with Honors from Hunter College MFA Program in Painting and Sculpture. I live and work in New York City. I am represented by galleries in New York City, Paris, France and San Francisco, California. My first solo show in New York City was favorably reviewed in the New York Times. I am preparing for my second solo show in New York City at Stux Gallery.

Don Porcella’s latest paintings for MMGalleries Archeofacts Exhibition are made from real objects like furniture, road signs and shipping crates. Porcella finds these objects in his natural surroundings of the city and cuts them up and reassembles them into one of a kind 2 dimensional paintings.

Porcella is interested in objects that have their own personal history due to the natural wear and tear of their natural environment. By cutting up these objects Porcella reconstitutes their individual history and experience into a new experience for the viewer.

Rich in texture and extremely well crafted these paintings have an alluring personal presence for the viewer. The viewer is left to decipher the new gestalt that is created when parts from a different whole are re-examined in the new context of the finished pieces of art.
