Jessie Morgan — Biography

Jessie Morgan begins her paintings by creating a textured surface that resembles the ocean floor or skin under magnification. Working on stretched canvas, she applies multiple layers of transparent paint and often charcoal and pastel. She works on a flat surface, so the paint does not run but pools selectively. The overlapping organic images reference things above, on and below the surface, and are meant to reveal layers of time and space. Yet the works are often evocative of specific things – from the natural to the manmade. Morgan ponders the life cycle, our place in the universe, and the mystery of the physical world. In her works, one can be surprised by the depth of feeling called up by simple paint on a canvas, demonstrating that the human experience can be reduced to line, form and color, and yet have strong resonance in the heart and mind of the viewer. |
