Jeanie Lee

Born in Massachusetts,U.S.A (Korean)
Flowers are the theme that captures me the most. My interest in them started from the moment when I was deeply moved by a pair of wild flowers that stood firmly facing the sun. The countless seeds found on such flowers seemed to symbolize the vitality of each and every living being. A reason I was attracted to the subject is that it is not only aesthetically beautiful, but also coincides with the ideal of a Korean painting, my major as an undergraduate. Traditionally, the vital element in Chinese and Korean paintings is revealing energy. That is to say, expressing vitality plays a major role in painting.
In order to express the emotional touch I feel from flowers, I use my own thumbs and hands to allow me to control the strength and pressure of my unique mark more directly. A vibrant life like feeling in painting is the key point that I am mostly concerned about. Amidst the painting process, pouring pigments and drawing lines, I try to balance the controlled parts and the out of control ones. Just as there are two sides to the same coin, my painting spans both abstraction and figuration. Intuitive spontaneity as well as a planned outline make my painting vibrate.
I want my work to be full of life and simultaneously capture people’s contemporary demands. I hope my painting will contain something that can open the viewer’s heart and purify their emotions in the same way that I feel myself clarified through my subject and process.
