CU29 Chair2007expanded polystyrene clad in an electro-deposited layer of 99.9% pure copper
28.75 x 36.50 x 36.50 in.
Style/Movement: Contemporary This Studio piece is produced in a limited edition of eight pieces, exclusive to Moss. Numbered and signed, each piece, by definition of the process, is unique. Also available is the prototype piece, which was made by Dixon in order to test the possibilities of the newly developed electro-deposition process. This remarkable new copper chair is based on Dixon's extremely lightweight Expanded Polystyrene Chair (EPS Chair), first introduced in 2006 during the London Design Festival. At that time, 500 EPS chairs were given away during an installation in Trafalgar Square in what became a somewhat notorious frenzy. With CU29, nanocrystalline copper is 'grown' onto the EPS Chair using a highly sophisticated electroplating process. During full immersion in a liquid bath containing pure copper crystals, the textured surface of the chair's intricately curved industrial form attracts the honeycombed-patterned crystals, resulting in a unique copper cladding, extremely strong yet surprisingly lightweight. |
