The same year this work was made, 1926, Käthe Kollwitz had a large exhibition of her works in New York City as a relief effort to raise money for impoverished German children. As a testament to her impact and popularity, in 1927 for her 60th birthday she received over 500 cards and letters. One such letter from a Frenchman named Romain Rolland said, "This woman of manly heart has looked on [the poor], has taken them into her motherly arms with a solemn and tender compassion. She is the voice for the silence of those who have been sacrificed." (Klein & Klein, pg.92)
