Mel Ramos

June 12, 2007—June 28, 2007

Mel Ramos is one of the central figures of the American Pop art movement, a movement famous for its appropriation of imagery garnered from popular culture and the mass media.

Ramos initially explored cartoon images as subject matter for his painting, as in his comic book series of 1962-64 of costumed heroes and heroines. He then moved on to develop a specific kind of Pop art iconography by combining nude pin-up girls from American magazines and advertisements with branded consumer products.

In the summer of 2007 Robert Sandelson will present his second show of the artist focusing on his early period of the 1960s.
