PAST EXHIBITION
Wyndham Lewis: Portraits
August 1, 2008—October 19, 2008
This exhibition centred on Wyndham Lewis’ unique record of the most important, literary, modernist creators of the first half of the twentieth century. Central to this is his involvement with the other ‘Men of 1914’, such as Ezra Pound, T.S. Eliot and James Joyce. The main attraction will therefore be the 1938 portrait of Eliot, well-known in small reproductions, not seen in the UK since 1980, and not seen in London since 1956. This portrait also unifies the show in other respects, chiefly as an example of the controversy and publicity that characterised Lewis as an artist. (The rejection of the 1938 portrait of Eliot by the selection committee of the Royal Academy for their annual exhibition caused a furore, with front-page headlines prompted by the resignation of Augustus John in protest).
