John Bonick: Channel Surfing
July 30, 2008—August 29, 2008
Andrea Schwartz Gallery is pleased to announce “Channel Surfing”, a
solo exhibition for Napa artist John Bonick. The ropy lines of layered
paint in John Bonick’s work resemble a tangle of nerves, the lines of a
tree trunk or layers of sediments laid down over time. He describes
these layers as “channels” and relates them to naturally occurring
pathways like stems, branches, veins, trails, blood lines, etc. The
channels generally extend beyond the edge of the picture. Each image
is only a temporal slice of the constant and continuous flow. By
exploring these “channels” Bonick is probing for the point at which
these lines become meaningful and in turn deciphering if having a
“meaning” creates boundaries and disrupts the flow of connectivity.
