Morgan Russell and His Modern Mentors
June 14, 2008—August 14, 2008
MONTCLAIR, NJ, May 22, 2008 — The Montclair Art Museum (MAM) is pleased
to announce the opening of Morgan Russell and His Modern Mentors.
Nearly two-dozen works selected from MAM’s extensive Russell holdings
will be on view June 14 – September 14, 2008. The pieces demonstrate
the artist’s exploration of French Impressionism, Fauvism, Cubism, and
other movements of the early twentieth century. Russell belonged to the
avant-garde circle of Leo and Gertrude Stein and studied in the popular
Académie Matisse (ca. 1908–1910) in Paris under the celebrated Fauve
(“wild beast”) master.
