PAST EXHIBITIONAlison Elizabeth Taylor: New Works
May 22, 2008—June 21, 2008 Alison Elizabeth Taylor: New Works May 22 – June 21, 2008 James Cohan Gallery is pleased to welcome back Alison Elizabeth Taylor for her second solo show. Taylor is best known for her narrative works made using the craft of wood marquetry. Taylor’s modern stories are sharp social critiques that illuminate the estrangement from nature, sexual tensions and violence underlying contemporary American life. The people in her works live out their lives in the culturally barren subdivisions and suburban sprawl of the American west. Culture's castaways, they indulge in modern life's distractions: sex, video games, oversized cars, guns and drugs. Along with new marquetry “paintings,” Taylor is planning on creating a room-sized installation all in wood inspired by the Gubbio Studiolo room at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY. Exploring new ways of working with wood, Taylor will also be presenting a new series of drawings using pyrography, or wood-burning art. Alison Elizabeth Taylor was born in Los Vegas, Nevada and now lives and works in New York City. In 2006 she was awarded the Marie Walsh Sharpe Art Foundation Space Award. |
