CURRENT EXHIBITIONGeorge Tooker: A Retrospective
October 2, 2008—January 4, 2009
For more than sixty years George Tooker’s (born 1920) narrative paintings helped maintain and expand the figurative tradition in postwar American art. Working exclusively in the painstaking technique of egg tempera, the artist has created mysterious narratives that examine fundamental human experiences of love, death, aging, isolation, alienation, grief, optimism, and hope. This exhibition is the first retrospective of Tooker’s work in three decades and will provide a comprehensive examination of his place in American art, revealing the full scope of his achievement. Additionally, the exhibition contains a substantial selection of Tooker’s rarely exhibited working drawings, allowing viewers a fascinating glimpse into the artist’s working methods. |
