UPCOMING EXHIBITION
Arshile Gorky: A Retrospective
June 6, 2010—September 6, 2010
This exhibition will celebrate the extraordinary life and work of Arshile Gorky (1904-1948), who was one of the greatest American painters of the twentieth century and a seminal figure in the Abstract Expressionist movement. Although Gorky’s life was cut short by his suicide in 1948, the impressive body of work that he left behind secured his reputation as the last of the great surrealist painters and one of the first abstract expressionists. The retrospective will include some 180 works of art—paintings, sculpture, prints, and drawings—many of which have not been previously shown to the public. This comprehensive retrospective will be the first full-scale survey of Gorky’s work since the Guggenheim’s retrospective in New York in 1981.
