PAST EXHIBITION
John Hartman - Cities: San Francisco & New York
October 1, 2008—October 30, 2008
John Hartman is drawn, in port cities like San Francisco, to the
juxtaposition of densely packed man-made structures with the luminosity
of the water that surrounds them—a charged dichotomy of solidity and
liquidity, the modern and primordial. His compositions, too, harness
the power of contrasts, placing turbulent areas alongside tranquil
monochromatic spaces. Influenced by the cityscapes of the
early-mid-century Viennese expressionist painter Oskar Kokoschka,
Hartman infuses his urban vistas with a churning emotional undercurrent.
