Heavy Light: Recent Photography and Video from Japan
May 16, 2008—September 7, 2008
Heavy Light: Recent Photography and Video from Japan explores
the inventive imagery and unconventional sensibilities that
characterize recent photo-based art in Japan. The exhibition features
works by thirteen Japanese artists, among them Makoto Aida, Naoya
Hatakeyama, Tsuyoshi Ozawa, Risaku Suzuki, and Miwa Yanagi.
Heavy Light
concentrates on four major themes that have come to occupy Japanese
artists working with photography and video. These are the reshaping of
Japanese tradition; the relation of Nature to the man-made world;
costume play and the search for personal identity; and the child as
cultural icon. The exhibition catalogue also features extended
interviews with the artists. Through a selection of distinctive works
by a diverse group of Japanese artists,
Heavy Light provides fresh insights into one of Asia's most visually provocative cultures.
