The delicate aesthetics and provoking themes within young Cao Weihong’s
work is compelling and curious. Her portrayals of women in traditional
Chinese society are as sensitive as they are sensual. She pays close
attention to ornate objects such as vases or beautifully carved wooden
Chinese screens and juxtaposes these classical or ‘traditional’ objects
with half clothed or entirely naked women. Are these females ‘household
objects' of value or desire? Cao’s delicate brushstrokes paired with an
earthy color palette give ample mood and atmosphere to her paintings.
The bold contours and seemingly 'candle lit' shadows within her work
speak of secrets. This leaves much to be interpreted by the viewer.
