Eva Walker: Hey Püppchen!
May 9, 2008—May 31, 2008
Press Release
We are pleased to announce the Hey Püppchen! exhibition by the Leipzig artist Eva Walker (b. Heidelberg, Germany, 1981; studied with Prof. Rug, Burg
Giebichenstein, Halle/Saale) and would like to invite you to the
opening reception at 7 pm on Thursday, May 8, 2008.
'We want to look upon all living creatures as a wonderful artificial marionette, created by the gods – whether as a plaything or in earnest with any kind of purpose' (Plato).
In the work of Eva Walker, puppets become ambivalent. Since they are subject and object at the same time, they are disturbing borderline figures, for they resemble the living; and yet, they are inanimate. The beholder is drawn back onto himself by the dolls: To what extent am I autonomous? To what extent am I not a puppet myself? Depending on the observer's perspective they can serve as vehicles to project one's own ideas, wishes and memories or they can remain lifeless, distant objects. Eva Walker's works are situated in the tension between the familiar and the unknown, and between the clandestine and the uncanny. Formally, they oscillate between the graphical and the painterly; and in their reduction to black and white, they render possible associations rich in contrast and color. |
