PAST EXHIBITION
Juliana Ortiz : PostPost
October 9, 2008—November 8, 2008
Press Release
With POSTPOST, Juliana Ortiz takes up aspects of her September exhibition POST and carries her statement to new extremes in a highly reduced way.
Corresponding to the recurring painting 'Bett', a voluminous construction made of several canvases, electric cables, and mirrors makes its appearance. The continuous effort to focus on the inner and outer worlds involves repeated failures, resulting in a perpetually changing, distorted image of the world and an indispensable interplay between sharp and fuzzy definition. The video image 'Auge' thematically reverts to the everyday. It presents the observer with a glossy photograph of the artist's right eye, whose iris is represented in a video. The painted interior of a globe fills up with beluga lentils, thus forming the pupil. The playback of this sequence is looped forward and backward to suggest attempts at optical focusing, selective percipience, and communication. Many lenses/lentils, many impressions create complex, multifarious imagery of the self and the vis-à-vis.
