PAST EXHIBITION
Pale the Wall: Vanessa Hodgkinson
February 4, 2008—June 8, 2008

Press Release

From February to June, Vanessa Hodgkinson will create work on a three-meter high wall constructed in the exhibition space at Leighton House Museum. The idea of a wall is central to her residency. Leighton himself undertook work on various mural projects during his lifetime (the most famous being at the Victoria and Albert Museum – V&A).

From a contemporary perspective however, Vanessa has decided to combine this with Leighton’s interest in the Middle East and the construction of the ‘partition’ wall in the West Bank today. In advance of her residency, Vanessa conducted a research trip to Ramallah in May-June 2007, which was in association with the A.M. Qattan Foundation.

As a result of this experience, her residency will raise debate around issues such as orientalism and the relationship between art and politics.

The exhibition space will effectively become Vanessa’s working studio with the public allowed to drop in and chat to Vanessa as her project progresses.

A series of events will be run in conjunction with the residency. Please be aware that you are visiting an artwork in development. Vanessa will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the content of the project or her working practice. Please do take this opportunity to engage with an artist at work.
