Rauschenberg was known worldwide as one of the purveyors and shapers of American art in the 20th century, working across media in painting, sculpture, and drawing, as well as across disciplines.
The work was discovered during a routine X-ray prior to the installation of a show of portraits of Tudor women, which opened on April 29 at Montacute House in Somerset.
