Cate Högdahl and Nelson Ruiz-Acal’s Lowchair Oz
Cate Högdahl and Nelson Ruiz-Acal create furniture, they say, by observing interactivity. Their aluminum-and-suede Oz lounge chair lets you change or mix color by flipping to the next of several layers of suede on the seat. Doubling as a display for their sponsor, Danish textile company Gabriel, the Oz took a year to develop, and it is inspired by the couple’s personal relationship: “We came up with this piece because when Cate and I moved in together we discussed the color of the sofa and the whole apartment, and we never really agreed. But we both thought that you can like a color one day and then get bored of it the next.” There was no boredom or disagreement, however, over master design couple Charles and Ray Eames, whose influence is visible in the proportions, posture, and basic palette of the Oz.
