Cate&Nelson pick Molo Design’s softseating system

Product design duo Cate Högdahl and Nelson Ruiz-Acal chose Molo Design’s softseating system for its flexibility, simplicity, and sculptural beauty. Developed by Vancouver architects Stephanie Forsythe and Todd MacAllen, the seating uses a basic unit made of laminated paper or synthetic textile that fans open to a rigid honeycomb structure. Individual units connect via hidden magnets, producing a varied landscape of Slinky-like benches, ottomans, and poufs. “Something like this looks easy and obvious, but somebody had to think of it,” said Ruiz-Acal. Although affordable for a designer seat, this paper furniture is pricier than the equivalent from IKEA, which did not dissuade Ruiz-Acal: “One should pay for a good idea. After all, being imaginative isn’t like suddenly seeing the light — it takes effort.”
