Summer Art Shopping in New York

Lia Halloran, "Dark Skate/South Pas Symmetry" (2007). Available at DCKT Contemporary for $3,500 ($850 extra for mounting and framing)

For her second New York solo show, Lia Halloran photographed herself skateboarding around deserted parts of Los Angeles at night with lights mounted to her body, producing eerie nightscapes that imbue the urban setting with a pleasing afterimage.

As she streaks across off-limit skating haunts like the L.A. River Bridge and Griffith Park, a stationary camera captures her movements as laserlike flashes. These visual knockouts are a semi-hallucinatory light trip through the dark side of industrial Los Angeles.

The artist debuted selections from the “Dark Skate” series at the short-lived Scope London art fair last October; now DCKT gallery on the Bowery is presenting the entire grouping of 11 C-prints. Most come in editions of 5 (with two artist proofs).
