Su Xinping: "Toasting" at ChinaSquare, September 3–27, 2008

Things are no more comfortable over at ChinaSquare, where Su Xinping’s show “Toasting” presents image after large-scale image of shirtless, somewhat paunchy men (and the rare, fully-clothed female guest) raising their glasses, offering toasts, getting a little rowdy, and occasionally breaking into full-throated song. That the celebrations seem to be taking place in some vague, sulfurously lit underworld makes them all the more alarming.
